Professor Singh taught English literature for over three decades, most recently at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, before founding News Lens India in retirement. His teaching and his writing have long shared a single concern: how language shapes what a reader is allowed to think.

That concern carries directly into his work on NLI — where a news report is read with the same attention once given to a poem or a novel, and where the question is rarely just "what happened," but "how was I told what happened, and by whom."
